Middle to end of last week I contacted several other orphanages in the Taipei area. None of them would allow us to take the children out for ride due to legal issues. To my regret I also had to learn that TV camera are not allowed in Taiwan's orphanages. This may sound strange but makes sense. Despite all such children homes are so called 'orphanages' only a few kids are real orphans. Most of the kids in the 'orphanages' are from broken families or were abused and taken away from their parents (-> protective custody) or both parents are jailed and no other relatives want or can take care of them. Point is that if parents identify their kid(s) through the TV or a newspaper photo the kid(s) wouldn't be safe any more. That's why even if officials (e.g. the President of Vice President) visit orphanages, the kids shown in the TV news and newspaper are either 'sorted' real orphanages or simply 'dummies'.

Yesterday evening, on my way back from Keelung/Pingshi, I stopped at the The Bethany Children's Home in Mucha and talked to Linda McFerran. They have over 60 kids living there aged 2 to 22. Not all kids will or can join the activity but Linda McFerran estimates that approx. half of them will join. She will tell me a more accurate number as well as the number per age group middle of the week, so that we can buy the appropriate toys. As I could see myself, the place is very suitable for such an activity, as they have a large garden with playground. OK, here is the plan:

Date: April 2nd (Saturday - FYI: Children's Day is on 04/04)
Location: The Bethany Children's Home, 129 BaoYi Rd., Mucha (Taipei 116 -> map)
Start: 11:00AM
Program: BarBQ for lunch (grills are available), playing and Q&A in the afternoon
End: Late afternoon (probably 4:00 ~ 5:00PM)

I will bring my camera and take a picture of each kid on the bike of its choice, develop the pictures and give them to Linda McFerran for distribution a few days later. It's a kind of memory for the kids of this day & activity.

If possible, I will invite one or two newspapers to cover the event (still need to get the approval from the orphanage's principle). Unfortunately, the pictures are not allowed to show the kids directly. Either the picture(s) just show the riders & helpers or faces of kids in the picture(s) must be made unrecognizable. Anyway, we will see.

Regarding the toys and food, if you like and agree I will simply buy everything and we share the costs afterwards. I will also ask a few companies (e.g. banks) for a sponsorship but without TV coverage it's probably not so easy. Nonetheless, I will try.

Meanwhile, please tell me who will definitively join. So far registered are: Marty, Liza, James, Thierry, Guido, Brad and Hermann. Potential candidates are Otto and Sam. Andreas said that he cannot join, as he will be out of country. Liza, please ask if someone from the Pro team will join and how many of your friends (none-riders such as Laura) will help. All in all we I hope to have around 15 ~ 20 riders & helpers joining the event.

PS: Sam, certainly we can work together and you can bring some of your friends. Just let me know how many of them so that we can plan accordingly. Either send me a PM or give me a ring at 0930-920 116. Smile

Hi Marty!

Great. I could meet you & James somewhere near Taipei, if you don't know where the orphanage is.

Regarding accommodation, sorry, my apartment is really too small (~ 20 ping) for another visitor, as for our family it's just a place for dinner and the night, as all of us are out during daytime. Worst case, I can arrange rooms in a new motel near by the orphanage in Hsintien. Let me know if you need my help regarding accommodation.

Thanks Herman, lets wait and see what Guido AKA Geraldo has to say...I remember him offering up his place once or twice....maybe that's still a possibility??....if that dosen't pan out..I guess the motel will be our crash point!..cheers

hi, hm

i had made a few calls to friends about the ToyRun program. i believe the host of the forum http://www.run2w.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=79 will contact you. he rides a blue XX. his net nick name is XX BOU. he claims he knew you. i think the Northern Bike Club (recently established, in Jan) may participate it (sort of).

However, during the convesation with him. i discovered there is a long trip to Kending (in the southest Taiwan) at April 2,3 or something. therefore early April which is near Children Day will be a BUSY week to riders since there are too many activities.

as to myself, i am just informed that there might be a business trip to ShanDong province, China from March 29-April 5. however, the trip is not very certain yet. there is still a great chance i do not have to go. if i am NOT in China, i will definiately join this. Kending tirp is attaractive, but uncapable to compare to ToyRun.

Hi guys...

I'm in China right now, but I'll be back in TW this weekend. Probably just in time for the crap weather to begin again... dammit... Evil or Very Mad ...

April 2 seems fine for me, although this is based on the assumption that I won't have to be in China at that time...

Thanks for your offer Thierry!... that sounds great, much better than riding home to Taichung in the dark...

anyway, I'll be in touch again once I get back to Taiwan..

Cheers...

James

Exclaim: *** IMPORTANT *** IMPORTANT *** IMPORTANT *** Exclaim:

Linda McFerran called me in the late afternoon and informed me that 2/3 of all kids came back from school today with a note, which says that they have to attend an activity on 04/02 for Children's Day. It appears to be impossible to skip this event in school (compulsory). Thus, we either have to move the schedule one week ahead or postpone it by one or two weeks. What do you think? I guess to postpone it is better for most of you?! Please advise what you prefer.

Thanks.

I repeat my question, especially for Guido, James, Thierry & Brad: Exclaim:

"... we either have to move the schedule one week ahead or postpone it by one or two weeks. What do you think? I guess to postpone it is better for most of you?! Please advise what you prefer. "

Confused: Confused: Confused:
