These are a few of the pictures that I took on a ride earlier this week. My friend Lawrence and I initially planned to go over the Southern-Cross Highway and then up the east coast to Taroko. However, due to the typhoon, the first section of the Southern-Cross was closed. We therefore decided to go over the Central-Cross Highway instead. Usually on a Sunday morning the road from Puli to Chingjing is jam-packed with cars and tour buses as locals scramble up the mountain so as to be on time for the sheep-shearing show. (Personally, I'll never understand the attraction of fondling a sheep!). On this occasion, though, the typhoon had scared many people away and, as a result, we had the road virtually to ourselves.

Me heading up Hehuanshan on the first day of the trip.

My friend Lawrence on his Honda Shadow.

This landslide delayed us for about an hour.

This local guy had ridden down from Hsinchu in the early hours of the morning. He had already fallen off his bike earlier in the day near Puli after he fell asleep! He told us he was planning to ride all the way back to Hsinchu via Ilan before the end of the day!

After we got past the landslide, there were no further delays as we continued up Hehuanshan.

My attempt at nature photography. I had to wait a long time before this bloody bee would stay still!

This was taken from the sacred tree on the eastern side of the Central-Cross. There's an excellent coffee shop here.

Continuing our journey east towards Tianxiang.

The gorgeous gorge.

This is the Shakadang Bridge in Taroko Gorge, which is the starting point for the Shakadang Trail. This trail is 4.5 kilometres long and there are lots of fantastic places to swim all along it.

Nature's swimming pool.

Looking towards Hualian from a small temple just off highway 11.

The weather remained perfect as we headed back over Hehuanshan.
