The KLX 250 I'm looking to buy is pretty popular with mods. A lot of beast to be unleashed in that bike from what I've read.

The main mod I'm looking at is the Bill Blue big bore kit. Turn that 250 into a 351. It has a proven track record and short of screwing up the install, I can expect quite a bit of longevity.

So my question...

A) Is there any way to legally do this mod? Can I go into the DMV and tell them I increased the engine size (same engine, just bigger bore and piston)? I would assume some kind of tests would be done on the bike, some money paid, etc... or is this not possible? Or not feasible b/c price prohibitive?

B) Visually there is no way of knowing there was a mod done (unless they have extremely detailed pics of the engine...but being Taiwan, let's say for argument's sake nobody cares) so I'm thinking the only way they would know is through the emissions test, right?

I'd guess a 351 would put out more (whatever they're measuring) than the 250, and prob fail the test. Does this sound right?

I've heard from friends that some mechanics will help out with passing your motorcycle. I've never needed that kind of help, but from what smoke pouring scooters I've seen on the road, I'd believe it's true. In practice, are those shops out there?

Just talking shop. Not asking legal advice. All hypothetical questions. Smile

...well, I would leave it standard, but if you really trust the locals to do the conversion then I think no need to inform the DMV...it looks the same on the
exterior...(they wouldnt pass it anyway)

- if the bike is already registered Im pretty sure they dont do emission tests
on the yearly DMV inspection...I havnt had to do one for years.

- Is the bike injected? If not, you'll need re jetting for the carburators and
theoretically new exhaust to cope with the higher volume.

...honestly? I would keep looking for 450 suzuki or similar...you can use it legally on elevated highways too... Wink

I'm thinking to do the mod myself. Looks straightforward enough. Just need a few extra tools I don't have.

Yeah, it has a carb. Though from what I read, you can use it stock with some minor tuning. I'm planning to buy a new pumper carb anyway, also sold by bill blue. So maybe a moot point.

Header and exhaust will be changed after I buy it. Heard that bike is pretty anemic in stock form.

Guy selling it mentioned not having to do emissions test for like 5 years or something, then having to do it yearly after that. Need to look into it ...

Yeah, DRZ would be more suitable for me power wise, though I like the smaller bikes for the tighter trails I tend to find myself on. (Prob hiking trails strictly speaking.) 😃

Ok guys I did some research. I hadn't realize the *new klx's in taiwan had EFI. This is good news though. Emailed a guy overseas who has a klx modded with a 331 big bore and aftermarket fuel injector controller. The controller will allow you to bring the bike back to stock fueling levels or below quite easily. He says it will run at those levels no problem. So I see no reason why it couldn't pass emissions.

Think I got what I need. Now to pony up the cash for it. Sad

*Yeah, I decided to buy new. The "2012" this guy was selling turned out to be a 2010. My mechanic also believes it can't possibly have 800km on it based on a few things he saw. Two red flags are enough for me to walk away.
